We are being asked whether an additional sales tax should be imposed for the purpose of enlarging and relocating the Joplin Museum. I am in favor of improving our museum, but I do not believe a sales tax is the way to do it. Please consider the following before you decide how to vote.
Sales taxes are regressive. This means that they affect people with lower incomes (who spend more of their money each month) more than those with higher incomes (who save and invest more of their money each month).
Capitalism works because it rewards entrepreneurial skill, innovation, risk, and hard work. It works best and its rewards are higher when it succeeds on its own. When business requests government help it is proper to question its necessity and, if given, how broad and direct will be the benefits to the taxpayers.
Sales taxes should properly be used for projects which benefit the general population such as police, traffic safety and fire services, not just small groups or businesses. What sales taxes should not be raised for includes casinos, stadiums, convention centers and museums.
